‘Grindhouse’ Economics: A Perfect Recipe! UPDATED: See the faux “Thanksgiving” Trailer NOW!

Gotta hand it to Bob and Harvey (Weinstein), they know what they’re doing. On April 6th, Dimension Films–genre arm of the Weinstein Company (formerly Miramax) will release Grindhouse, the umbrella title for two back-to-back throwback features directed by Robert Rodriquez and Quentin Tarantino. Combined, both movies cost a total of $53 million to to produce, are directed by two of the hottest directors in town, have a ridiculously foreign-friendly genre (Tarantino big action), and did I mention they cost $53 million to make? Can you say no-brainer? This will be the Weinstein Company’s grand opening in my humble opinion and will most likely breakeven on the foreign revenue alone with domestic and DVD being the gravy. Grindhouse is gonna clean up, that’s all there is to it.

What is the Grindhouse you say? It’s a genre brought forth in the 1970s described in the trailer as “featuring uncensored sexuality and hardcore thrills.”

My favorite trailer is here:

Other than the fact that Kurt Russel’s career will be re-juiced, the irony is that the Weinstein Company spent $27 million on each film and their directors intentially made them look like they spent $27 thousand. Part of the charm I guess.

Also check out the trailer for the faux Grindhouse-style filmThanksgiving that will play between the two films advertising a coming attraction that doesn’t exist. At the end, look very closely and try to find Nick Cage in a cameo as a lunitic. Can you find anyone else?

Also, check out the film’s website. Damn fine and interactive, too.
