One Frame of Lowry Digital Images breathtaking restoration of “North by Northwest”.

As per Variety today:

Demos joins Lowry Digital Images
Exec named senior algorithm scientist
By DAVID S. COHEN

Gary Demos has joined Lowry Digital Images. Demos will be a senior algorithm scientist at Lowry, which is an industry leader in digital film restoration and image enhancement.

Demos received the Gordon E. Sawyer Oscar in 2006 and has received scientific & technical awards from the Academy in 1985, 1995 and 1996. Lowry was acquired in April by Indian-owned Reliance Big Entertainment.

(Click here for the original Variety Story Link.)

I’ve written about the amazing work of John Lowry and Lowry Digital Images for years (See this post about the James Bond remasters). John’s company remarkably enhances and restores image quality that has never been visible before. Using computer algorithms, John has been able to pull out image information that was previously invisible to the naked eye, and actually deliver new masters (and now negatives) of classic motion pictures that are SUPERIOR to the original NEGATIVE of the movie. AMAZING.

A number of years ago I produced a documentary entitled “Crossing the Frontier: Making ‘The Last Starfighter’”on the groundbreaking work of Gary Demos and his then company “Digital Productions” as they pioneered the use of computers to replace models in visual effects. The innovations at the time ignited the computer generated imagery (CGI) effects work of today. I’m exceptionally proud of that documentary, and I’ve always been inspired by his pioneering spirit.

Gary invited me to his office years ago, and shortly before the hidef standard was declared, he had brilliant proposals that were fresh and revolutionary. He was also working on remarkable compression technology that actually improved image quality by dropping dirt and noise information from a source instead of image quality. So in essence, his compression would actually reduce the size of the source material while IMPROVING THE QUALITY! I left his office amazed by the possibilities, and remarkably impressed by his passion and talent.

When I heard today that these to pioneers had teamed up, I needed to blog to truly report that this is a special day… a day that I believe is going to change the way we enjoy movies forever. There’s a long list of films that Lowry Digital Images has already processed, and Gary’s innovations have already been influential to the industry as a whole.

(Lowry Digital Images has processed, the Star Wars Original Trilogy, The Indiana Jones Trilogy, All of the James Bond films prior to Casino Royale, North by Northwest, and so many more…)

I’ll be updating and adding to this post over the next few days, so come back and learn more about this amazing union!

This announcement has made my year!

Coming soon…. a blog speculating about why ONLY ‘Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull’ is the only Indiana Jones film coming to BluRay, and what Lowry Digital Images has to do with this.

Inventor Denny Klein described his invention of Hydrogen Technology as a ‘unique electrolysis process.’ Though this is pretty exciting stuff, it raises several questions:

1. Is the by-product truly just Oxygen, Hydrogen, or a weird combination of both?
2. Will there be a more deadly bi-product like Chloride or Fluoride floating in the air if we use water from our tap?
2. With the right filtration system, can we use anything that has water in it….. urine, 7-UP, beer? (Oh, wait a minute, we take back that last one).

Klein has been around for a few years, but the timing couldn’t be better for him to find himself an eternity of fame, let alone his 15 minutes. Here’s a link to his patent info on the invention and a couple older articles. Go Denny, go!

UPDATED EDITORIAL: There was a period of time when bottled water cost more than gas. Today the average liter of water at a 7-11 costs $1. So a gallon of ‘clean’ water costs $3.79 a gallon… the same price as a gallon of gas in Los Angeles today. Of course at 100 miles on 4 oz. of water, this new system is far more efficient, and if the byproduct is clean oxygen, is it not poetic that this new energy source might actually improve the air over the smog-machines we currently drive? I’d much rather fill up a ten gallon tank with water than with gas any day.

Also, if the 4 oz. per 100 miles figure is correct, than this car would get 3200 miles to one gallon. (Why fill up with more than on gallon?)

Fictional thought: All I can imagine now is how excited the powers would be if they found a nearby planet that had oceans of oil… Some way to get there and harvest that oil could be created…. well… what if another nearby race looked at the Earth’s water supply the same way.??? Or did this already happen in the miniseries ‘V’?

Toy Story Series Gets 3D Digital Makeover

Pixar and Disney have just announced that both Toy Story I & II are being re-rendered in actual 3D for re-release in October 2009, as a prelude to March 2010′s release of Toy Story III–also in 3D. But Why would they go through all of the effort re-rendering both I & II when so much is being converted to 3D from an original 2D format. Why? The answer after the break….

For the latest DVD releases of Toy Story I & II, Pixar•Disney raised the technological bar by transferring the film directly from the digital frames instead of going to film, then back into a video transfer. The results were stunning. However, standard DVD has a resolution of 720×486 (with rectangular pixels for those ‘technical’), and that resolution is clearly lower than the master files.

However… Both films were created at 1536 × 922, and are far below the 1900×1080 resolution of 1080p HD (however higher than the 1280×720 of 720p HD), and therefore if they were transferred to 1080p HD, they would look soft and low resolution. (Take a look at the new compilation of Pixar’s shorts recently released on BluRay disc to view some of these lower resolution files on your 1080p quality system.)

<img src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=2livfoo-20&l=as2&o=1&a=B000V1Y446"0 width=200/>

It’s my understanding that all of the earlier pixar films were rendered at 1.5k (1526×922); whereas Pixar•Disney’s Cars was their first film to be rendered at 2048×1080; commonly referred to as 2k.

When you consider that the highest resolution of hidef video is 1920×1080, you can clearly see why both Cars and Rattatouie are available in 1080p HD, and none of the previous Pixar•Disney films are as of yet.

So, in order to have nice 1080p HD releases of the previous Pixar•Disney films, it’s going to REQUIRE a re-render of the entire film in a higher resolution to accomodate a new release. Thankfully, a new 3D release will not only impress and satisfy audiences, but will also give the financial support to the motivation to upres these films for HD.

What also excites me about the idea that Pixar•Disney is re-rendering the films, is the fact that rendering/shading technology has improved so dramatically since those films were originally made, and I hope that the original sources can be ‘plugged-into’ the new software and higher and more natural results will be rendered. I’m sure it will be amazing…

Personally, I can’t want for a nice 1080p copy of Monsters Inc. (My bet is that this film will be next for the re-render/3D treatment.)

This is your good friend Sully… signing out.

It’s real! There is an official Apple iCar! I’ve seen it, we’ve all seen it since March 2006. His name is MAC iCAR, and he has the unique distinction of being the only ‘real world’ trademark in the Disney/Pixar motion picture, Cars.

It’s MAC iCAR, the unsung Apple trademarked hero of the film!

While sharp-eyed individuals may have spotted him in theaters and on DVD during the time-passing montage of the first race in the film, the new Blu-Ray high definition release gives us more information about this witty racer.

Highlighted from his fifteen seconds of fame in the only shot which he appears in the film, MAC iCAR keeps the pace…

Thanks to a new ‘Car Finder Game’ feature of the Blu-Ray disc, we can now learn more about this innovative racer. (However, it doesn’t seem to mention the historical significance to his number… ’84′… gee, I wonder what that’s supposed to signify.)

Also revealed on the new Blu-Ray disc is the iCar’s accessory, the iTrailer! (It’s a nice touch to expand a little on this cute guy’s product line!)

When I first noticed Mr. iCar at the theater I was filled with the backstory hilarity of the situation. Pixar went out of their way to make sure that there is NO product placement in their film, yet we have the iCAR. I really loved the nod, it was the closest nod since the back cover of the magazine at the end of Monsters Inc.; “Scare Different”.

Sometimes I see studios offering props from films on ebay. Usually they are small pieces that don’t mean much, but are nice to have. The point of the sale is another form of marketing, and rarely are they selling the item for the money.

You also have to appreciate that just about every prop, especially if it’s a key item, has anywhere from 3 to 10 identical copies, so you never truly know if it’s real, or actually used. Worth it? Usually not.

This week, there’s something different on ebay:

Now, if you look closely in the upper left-hand corner you’ll see (next to the other essential space item, the Bible) an iPod:

For many years its been known that the space shuttle’s computers are extremely outdated to today’s standards. Portable computers have been brought on board for science experiments, etc. This is the first time an iPod has been spotted on board. The funny part about this is that it appears not to be a current generation model, but one of the previous generations, so no television shows or movies for this crew. It’s also remarkable to notice that there is a dock connector plugged into the bottom of the unit. Could it currently be used as a hard drive? or perhaps a space black box? Is it plugged into an amazingly powerful shuttle stereo system??? or… and most likely… it it just being charged by the same batteries keeping the astronauts alive?

Cheers to the iPod! Risking its life in the name of science!

I wonder what’s on it… I wonder if NASA has ever updated the computers on the shuttle….

I wonder what they found on the moon:

It’s a good list, but is REALLY bringing up some questions of how much research they did. There are some MAJOR films missing.

First the list, then some of the missing movies. Be sure to add your own to the list!

25. Die Hard 2
24. Christmas Vacation
23. The Road Warrior
22. Before Sunset
21. Return of the Jedi

20. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
19. After the Thin Man
18. Bourne Supremacy
17. Superman II
16. Rocky II
15. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
14. Evil Dead 2
13. Toy Story 2
12. Dawn of the Dead
11. Kill Bill Vol. 2 (Would this even be considered a sequel?)
10. Bride of Frankenstein
9. X2: X-Men United
8. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
7. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
6. Terminator 2: Judgement Day
5. Spider-Man 2 (Skip 2, and go get your 2.1 DVD!)
4. Aliens
3. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
2. The Empire Strikes Back
1. The Godfather Part II

Okay. Now… Post in the comments what you feel is missing from the list. I’ll start us off with the films that I feel are seriously neglected:

LETHAL WEAPON 2 – In my opinion one of the greatest sequels ever made. The characters evolved, key motivations were amazingly expanded upon, and the film has a great amount of class. How could they possibly have missed this?

Back to the Future 3
Beverly Hills Cop 2 – Look, it’s better than Christmas Vacation!
A Nightmare on Elm Street 3 – This may just be an honorable mention.
Casino Royale… other bond films? They are sequels.
Pirates of the Caribbean 2 : Dead Man’s Chest

Spider-Man 2.1 is clearly the movie the way that Sam Raimi wanted it to be. Compared to 2.1, 2 has some continuity problems. It’s clear from 2.1 that a better assembly of the film existed before the film had to be shortened prior to it’s original release.

Okay, before going any further, who came up with this 2.1 concept?! Does this mean that there’s going to be a 2.2? 2.3? 2.4?! Will Spider-Man 2 ½ be a story that takes place between the two films? Honestly, 2.1 is a very poor title for this project.

We’re in a time when the ‘Mighty Dollar’ rules the world. Unfortunately it also can ruin the edit of a movie, for financial gain (i. e. Lost World: Jurassic Park). It can either force a film to be shortened to allow for an additional daily showing–or in its worst case–the film can be re-edited just to sell another copy of the film on DVD. Rarely, there’s a pure motivation behind the recut of a film… completing it the way it was originally intended. What a unique concept.

As a storyteller and someone intimately familiar with recutting a motion picture, I always find myself jarred by the familiar over-cutting of a movie for time or ratings. It’s all too common for you to perfect your film, tighten the edit, get the flow and continuity down, and reach that satisfying point where you can proclaim…”It’s done!” and begin to show your final work cut (with unfinished effects and sound mix) to your friends and colleagues (often to insure that you truly aren’t going crazy by being so close to a project for years and that you’re actually achieving the results you want). You’d be surprised by how many times you’ll reach this point, and the studio suddenly says “it’s great! But if you could cut it down just about another 10 minutes we’ll all be happy!” Groan… So… Do you fight, or go back… You work until the film is the best it can be under the circumstances and requirements of collaboration, and wish that you’ll have the chance to get it exactly the way you wanted in the future.

Thanks to the DVD market, there have been many opportunities for filmmakers to return to their films and iron out some of the issues that occurred during production. In a number of cases, studios have chosen to simply restore excised footage without the filmmakers involvement. We’d hope that this occurs with the filmmakers blessing, but that isn’t always the case. In general, when I hear about a ‘recut’ or ‘extended’ cut of a film, I start to look for information from the Director about what he/she did. When I can’t find a word, I get suspicious… and concerned. A trusted filmmaker’s unique vision of a film should never be compromised.

A perfect example of a recut for the purpose of revenue was Ridley Scott’s ALIEN Director’s Cut. This version of the film is wrong even in title. Not only did this recut betray the remarkable edit of the original film, but Ridley stated the following in his letter to the viewers included in the video release: “I felt that the original cut of ALIEN was perfect. I still feel that way… [then] Fox decided to re-release ALIEN…It was their hope that I would see fit to include several of the deleted scenes…in order to give moviegoers additional incentive to see the film [again].”

The most notorious case of this was when Universal Televsion—a group that would often recut a film without any filmmaker involvement to have a unique presentation for syndication television showings—recut David Lynch’s film Dune. While it was nice to see these excised scenes, the mixture of artwork, use of incorrect/out of context footage, and other inconsistencies turned the film into a mess that even Lynch couldn’t watch. That recut of the film no longer stated that it was Directed by David Lynch, that version was Directed by Alan Smithee. (When a Director wishes to take his name off of a picture he made, the Directors Guild’s replacement is ‘Alan Smithee’). The worst example of a theatrical recut came from a little birdy that told me about how Basic Instinct 2 was shortened prior to release JUST so that the DVD release could contain additional footage.

There’s a third financial reason for an altered cut, and one that in many cases is understandable (especially when you are an independent filmmaker). Budgetary. You’d think that once a film is already on its way to being a great success–and they’ve invested a great amount of money to the project–that a bit more to get it perfect would be worth it. Well, as so many short-sighted studios have in the past, Spider-Man 2 was released without some of these sequences because of budgetary reasons. In the case of this DVD release, the studio purchased an expensive insurance policy by releasing the film as it was, only to technically earn the extra budget in advance to finish these sequences and reinstate them today into a 2.1 release. It’s become a marketing game that operates on all the wrong reasoning.

Happily, its clear that Spider-Man 2.1 is a labor of love over a solitary motivation for money.

When I sat down to view Spider-Man 2.1, I was both surprised and pleased by how many of the fixes and additions flowed smoothly in the overall edit of the movie, from the additional character moments with Peter Parker’s good friend and future nemesis Harry Osborne, to considerably more hand-to-tenticale combat between Spidey and Dr. Octopus. If you look at the 2 version, there are sequences, such as their fight on the building right after the bank robbery, where you can tell that a piece of the fight was missing, the cut was abrupt, and the the sequence is almost unnoticably “off.” Now there’s an excellent flow to the added sequence where they fall through a lawyer’s office window and fight in the small hallway next to research bookcases before jumping/falling back out the window! It’s a dynamic sequence and one of real conflict. It helped make the scene far more intense, and more personal and man-to-man.

Probably my favorite action change comes during the elevated subway sequence. Let’s forget that Manhattan doesn’t have an elevated subway, and jump into the fantasy: It’s always bothered me that when Spidey is thrown off the train my Doc Oc, he suddenly ends up in front of him when he gets back onto the train. Now, with what appears to be the largest and most violent additional sequence, Spidey is being forced down the side of the train as he continually smashes into the track control boxes–it’s violent, feels painful to watch, and things can’t get worse…until… a train travelling in the opposite direction hits Spidey, and rips him right off of the train. This time, Spidey makes it back on the train—saving some lives in the process—and eventually saves everyone on board. Is this sequence too violent? To me, this felt far more human because of the violence, and painful for the same reason. I usually don’t like gratuitous and unmotivated violence, but the pain expressed really humanized the fight.

There are many added character moments, one of the best additions featured Daily Bugle Editor-In-Chief J. Jonah Jameson:

As for the transfer of the film, the picture quality looks superior to the “superbit” version of 2 so to my eyes, this is the best version of Spider-Man 2 in both cut, and appearance. Without a doubt, this disc should be part of your collection.

In the end, Spider-Man 2.1 is considerably better than Spider-Man 2, (it’s clear and you should spend the underpriced $12.99 at Amazon and get yourself a copy so that when you want to watch the film again, you can see it in its best presentation to date). The disc features a commentary and featurettes to fill out the package. What matters here is the film, and to the filmmakers I say Bravo! Too bad most people will likely never see this version over the original.
